Lateral Drifters

Cass and I have started playing music together again. The band is called
Lateral Drifters, and we’ve got a few songs:

Pop Song

Thirteen Idiots

Dirge Song

Gloom 44

Gloom 68/Theremin Song

A Judo Master Is Always Kicking My Ass

“A Plague Upon Both Your Houses”

In the works:

780 Song

Metaly Song

This thing Cass is working on

A bunch of stuff!

So you should give a shit. Maybe. If you want.

Do all of your web20 “liking” of things:

Facebook

Myspace shudder

and check out some tunes. We’ve been recording some rehearsals:

Bandcamp

Rehearsals

We made a video of The Trooper by Iron Maiden. It kicks ass.

We (attempt to) play acoustic at Habit’s on Sundays… If not, I’ll still
probably be there. Real shows this month!?!

Word.

RELIGION CAN KILL

‘Religion’ is a word concretizing a concept. It cannot kill anyone just as the
word ‘kill’ cannot kill anyone. But the decisions people make and the actions
they take based on words and concepts can, have, and continue to kill
people. So, religion can kill, as long as the chain of cause and effect is
kept in mind. Unless you’re a follower of Heidegger; then just interpret this
paragraph however you wish.

HEIL SWEET BRIAR - MISANDRY

From “Gifts of Speech”

Valerie Solanas

The SCUM Manifesto

It is now technically feasible to reproduce without the aid of males (or, for
that matter, females) and to produce only females. We must begin immediately
to do so. Retaining the male has not even the dubious purpose of reproduction.
The male is a biological accident: the Y (male) gene is an incomplete X
(female) gene…, that is, it has an incomplete set of chromosomes. In other
words, the male is an incomplete female, a walking abortion, aborted at the
gene stage. To be male is to be deficient, emotionally limited; maleness is a
deficiency disease and males are emotional cripples."

Heil Hitler! Heil Sweet Briar!

Meanwhile, back at the non-insane front…

From The Backlash! (OK, only somewhat non-insane —A.)

Robert Anton Wilson

Androphobia – The only respectable bigotry

In fact, if you listen to the rantings of any leading androphobe (such as
Andrea Dworkin, Carol Hemingway, or Robin Morgan) and mentally change the word
“male” to “Jew” every time it appears, the result would be totally
indistinguishable from the rantings of Hitler, because the “logic” of bigotry
is the same in all cases. It is the “logic” of ascribing one essence to a
miscellaneous group, which is only possible when all real-world daily facts
are replaced by generalized abstractions. but this flight into abstraction is
“politically correct” and virtually nobody dares to challenge it."

WHY KEEP TRYING

to work with audio on Windows? I’ve been running Linux and/or BSD for almost 4
years now, and never, not once, have I had a crash. But doing audio
production on anything but Windows/Mac is an exercise in futility at this
point, especially if you use software synthesizers and effects. It’s getting
better with time, but it’s still not there unless you want to do academic
noise experimentation or ‘three chords and a broken heart’ singer-songwriter
bullshit. So I installed Windows for the first time in a long while 6 months
ago:

iTunes ate almost my entire music collection.

Never on Linux/BSD have I had a userland app eat my data.

With time, I conveniently forgot the hellishness that is Windows and, seduced
by the siren song of my Superior 2.0 drums and a fat Minimoog, I installed it
again. It ran OK for three days, one of which I was booted into Slack for most
of the day, then:

Spectatcular crash [Black Screen of Death] while running REAPER with 3 tracks.
3 tracks! How can I trust this to do any actual work?

I am too broke to buy a Mac. I am fooked.

The “Those Whom the Gods Detest Tour II” is, per usual, not coming to

November 1st in Louisville, KY at Headliners (an awesome venue)

ANIMAL "RIGHTS" AND THE NEW MAN HATERS

To claim that man’s use of animals is immoral is to claim that
we have no right to our own lives and that we must sacrifice our welfare for
the sake of creatures who cannot think or grasp the concept of morality. It is
to elevate amoral animals to a moral level higher than ourselves—a flagrant
contradiction.

Thank you for the clarity of thought that was so desperately missing earlier
this evening. — Andrew

http://www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=objectivism_animal_rights

By Edwin Locke, Ph.D.

Recently a sixth grade student threatened to bomb the headquarters of a
prominent corporation, the Gillette Company. Gillette’s “crime”? The use of
animals to test the safety of their products. This student’s role models have
not been so hesitant. In the name of so-called “animal rights,” terrorists
have committed hundreds of violent crimes. They have vandalized or fire bombed
meat companies, fur stores, fast-food restaurants, leather shops and medical
research laboratories across North America. The animal “rights” movement,
however, is not about the humane treatment of animals. Its goal is the
animalistic treatment of human beings.

According to these terrorists, it is immoral to eat meat, to wear fur coats or
leather shoes, and to use animals in research—even if it would lead to cures
for deadly diseases. The terrorists are unmoved by the indisputable fact that
animal research saves human lives. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals) makes this frighteningly clear: “Even if animal tests produced a cure
for AIDS, we’d be against it.” (Vogue, 1989 -A)

How do the animal “rights” advocates try to justify their position? As someone
who has debated them for years on college campuses and in the media, I know
firsthand that the whole movement is based on a single invalid syllogism,
namely: men feel pain and have rights; animals feel pain; therefore, animals
have rights. This argument is entirely specious, because man’s rights do not
depend on his ability to feel pain; they depend on his ability to think.

Rights are ethical principles applicable only to beings capable of reason and
choice. There is only one fundamental right: a man’s right to his own life. To
live successfully, man must use his rational faculty—which is exercised by
choice. The choice to think can be negated only by the use of physical force.
To survive and prosper, men must be free from the initiation of force by other
men—free to use their own minds to guide their choices and actions. Rights
protect men against the use of force by other men.

None of this is relevant to animals. Animals do not survive by rational
thought (nor by sign languages allegedly taught to them by psychologists).
They survive through inborn reflexes and sensory-perceptual association. They
cannot reason. They cannot learn a code of ethics. A lion is not immoral for
eating a zebra (or even for attacking a man). Predation is their natural and
only means of survival; they do not have the capacity to learn any other.

Only man has the power to deal with other members of his own species by
voluntary means: rational persuasion and a code of morality rather than
physical force.
Of course, it is proper not to cause animals gratuitous
suffering. But this is not the same as inventing a bill of rights for them—at
our expense.

The granting of fictional rights to animals is not an innocent error. We do
not have to speculate about the motive, because the animal “rights” advocates
have revealed it quite openly. Again from PETA: “Mankind is the biggest blight
on the face of the earth”; “I do not believe that a human being has a right to
life”; “I would rather have medical experiments done on our children than on
animals.” These self-styled lovers of life do not love animals; rather, they
hate men.

The animal “rights” terrorists are like the Unabomber and Oklahoma City
bombers. They are not idealists seeking justice, but nihilists seeking
destruction for the sake of destruction. They do not want to uplift mankind,
to help him progress from the swamp to the stars. They want mankind’s
destruction; they want him not just to stay in the swamp but to disappear into
its muck.

There is only one proper answer to such people: to declare proudly and
defiantly, in the name of morality, a man’s right to his life, his liberty,
and the pursuit of his own happiness.

GENOSITE, QUARK, DISCOUNT AND RSYNC

I’ve been looking for different solutions to my web goings-on, including
hand coding, jekyll,
hakyll, and werc (my
favorite of them all). I’ve also tried wiki stuff, most notably
SigWik and usemod.
I’ve tried many more as well, but I was unsatisfied. What I’m looking for:

It has to be simple.

I want to write in Markdown.
Writing html is annoying.

No so-called ‘vanity’ languages. Ruby, Haskell, rc (werc’s biggest
detraction for me; my fault, because I don’t know rc.)

Then I started messing around with genosite,
and I was happy.

I can write pages in my editor, and categorize them via directories. It takes
the donkey-work out of managing the site, like werc, but isn’t as collaborative
as werc in terms of real-time editing. But, I don’t really care about this.

Then I use quark on port 8000, like with jekyll
and hakyll, for real-time previewing. It’s nice because I can run it in any
directory as a chroot, and all the relative and absolute links work, and
stylesheets are correctly applied.

Another nice thing is that I can use any Markdown implementation I want. My
favorites are Discount
and smu, both written in C. Once
I’m happy with everything, I can just rsync my local directory to the remote
server. Easy-peasy.

BOOKMARKING FOR UZBL

I edited the existing
insert_bookmark.sh
for uzbl
to make it (hopefully) simpler and remove a dependency on
zenity. Check it out:

#!/bin/bash

# A {replacement,alternative option} for insert_bookmark.sh

[ -d "${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}/uzbl" ] || exit 1

file=${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}/uzbl/bookmarks
entry=`echo "$6 $7\t" | dmenu -b -l`

if [ $? != 0 ]; then exit "$?"; fi

(echo -e "$entry" && cat $file) | sort -u > $file.$$ && mv $file.$$ $file

true

Clone the ‘repo’ :) with the following command:

hg clone http://hg.thelloyd.net/uib

It’s kind of a mash up between Lorenzo’s surf
solution and the one included with uzbl. Feedback would be cool.

BOOKMARKING FOR SURF, REDUX

Following up from the previous post on surf bookmarking:

Lorenzo found a very nice solution, involving no shell scripts.
Check it out.

I agree with L on the not using surf thing. I look at it, mess around with it
and stuff, but I’m not geeky enough to use it full time.

L’s config.h can be found on the
suckless wiki
as well.
